The Eras

130 years of recorded Sooner football

1895

The First Team

John A. Harts, a student who'd arrived in the land run era, organizes the first Oklahoma football team — before Oklahoma is even a state. The field is a pasture, the opponent is a town team from Oklahoma City, and the tradition starts here.

1905–1926

Bennie Owen Builds It

122–54–16 over 22 seasons, with undefeated years in 1911, 1915 and 1918. Owen coached for decades with one arm after a hunting accident, brought the forward pass west, and the field at Memorial Stadium has carried his name since the 1920s.

1947–1963

Wilkinson & The Streak

Bud Wilkinson goes 145–29–4 with national titles in 1950, 1955 and 1956, 13 straight conference championships — and the record nobody has touched since: 47 consecutive wins, 1953–57, ended only by Notre Dame, 7–0. There was also a 31-game streak before it. Norman simply did not lose in the fifties.

1973–1988

The Wishbone Years

Barry Switzer's teams run the wishbone at full gallop: 157–29–4, national titles in 1974, 1975 and 1985, and Billy Sims' 1978 Heisman. The 1971 Game of the Century against Nebraska — a 35–31 loss between No. 1 and No. 2 — is still replayed on Thanksgiving.

1999–2016

Big Game Bob

Bob Stoops inherits a program adrift and delivers a national title in year two: 13–0 in 2000, sealed in the Orange Bowl. 190 wins, ten Big 12 championships, and an 18-year standard of never missing a bowl.

2015–2021

The Quarterback Factory

Baker Mayfield (2017) and Kyler Murray (2018) win back-to-back Heismans — both walk-on-to-No.-1-pick stories — with Jalen Hurts a finalist the year after. Four College Football Playoff trips in five seasons.

2024–

The SEC Chapter

Oklahoma leaves the conference it dominated for the deepest league in the sport, renewing the Red River Rivalry inside it. The 2025 team returned the program to the College Football Playoff in just its second SEC season.

The Rivalries

Circle these in crimson

Texas Red River Rivalry

Every October at the Cotton Bowl, the State Fair of Texas outside and the stadium split exactly in half — crimson on one side, burnt orange on the other. Played since 1900, now an SEC conference game. Winner takes the Golden Hat. 🤘(rotate as needed)

Oklahoma State Bedlam

The in-state series OU has dominated like almost no other major rivalry — around ninety wins against twenty losses since 1904. Paused by realignment after 2023; Sooner fans still know the count.

Nebraska The Old Big 8 War

For decades the Thanksgiving game that decided the conference — and in 1971, the Game of the Century. Dormant since conference realignment, revived in occasional home-and-homes, never forgotten.
